The process by which the brain converts sensory input into neural activity patterns.
Neural encoding is the process by which the brain transforms sensory input — light, sound, motion — into patterns of neural activity. Every visual experience, including every video you watch, is ultimately encoded as a pattern of electrical signals across millions of neurons.
In visual neuroscience, encoding refers specifically to the relationship between a stimulus (such as a video frame) and the neural response it produces in the brain's visual hierarchy. Researchers study this process by presenting stimuli to subjects inside fMRI scanners and measuring which brain regions activate, at what intensity, and for how long.
The encoding model approach — training an AI to predict neural responses from visual stimuli — is the foundation of modern computational neuromarketing. Rather than asking participants to rate how they feel about content, encoding models measure what the brain actually does.
