VidCognition vs HookLens

Two Ad Scanners, One Publishes Its Accuracy

HookLens and VidCognition do close to the same job: upload a short-form ad, find out what is wrong with the hook. The interesting difference is not the feature list, it is which one tells you how well its score actually works.

Bottom line

HookLens covers more of the ad, including audio, captions and expected market fit. VidCognition goes deeper on the opening seconds, hands back rewritten hook lines, and publishes the measured limits of its own score. If you want breadth, look at HookLens. If you want a specific critique plus an honest account of how far to trust the number, VidCognition is built that way on purpose.

HookLens column reflects publicly documented features at the time of writing. Where a figure is not published by the vendor, this table says so rather than estimating it.

How each tool works

VidCognition

VidCognition sends the actual video to a vision language model prompted to behave like a senior paid-social strategist reviewing a cut before it goes live. It watches the ad, then writes up what happens in each segment: what the first two seconds ask a scrolling viewer to do, where the bridge loses them, whether the offer ever lands.

You get Hook, Bridge and Offer scored separately, one to five specific fixes, and rewritten hook lines. Paid plans also render a simulated brain-response curve from Meta's TRIBE v2 research model as a secondary panel, labelled directional in the product. The score is not derived from it.

HookLens

HookLens describes itself as an AI video ad scanner. You upload an ad and it scans frame by frame, analysing the hook, audio, captions and body, then reports what to fix and which markets it expects the ad to convert in. It returns a hook strength score out of 100 and requires an account, with a free first analysis.

The audio and caption coverage is genuinely broader than VidCognition's, which only reads the video. If a weak voiceover or unreadable captions is your suspected problem, that breadth matters.

What neither tool can do

Most comparison pages skip this part. These limits apply to VidCognition as much as to anything else in the category, and knowing them is what stops you making an expensive decision on a number.

Predict what your ad will earn

No pre-launch tool can tell you views, ROAS or revenue. Those depend on audience, bid, budget, offer and timing, none of which are visible in the video file. Treat any claim about which markets an ad will convert in with the same caution.

Reliably rank two near-identical variants

Measured against 218 videos with real retention labels, VidCognition's hook score sits at Spearman 0.43. That separates weak hooks from strong ones. It does not support a claim that a 72 beats a 68 — treat scores within a few points as tied and decide on the written critique instead. No comparable figure is published for HookLens, so its variant-level precision is simply unknown.

Replace a real test

The only thing that tells you how an ad performs is running it. Pre-launch review is for catching the obvious failures cheaply before you pay for the impressions, not for skipping the test.

Who should use each tool

Use HookLens if:

  • You want audio and caption analysis alongside the visual hook
  • You want a single scan covering the whole ad rather than the opening
  • Market and geo guidance is useful to how you buy

Use VidCognition if:

  • You want to know which second of your ad is losing people, not just a number
  • You want rewritten hook lines you can shoot tomorrow
  • You want Hook, Bridge and Offer scored separately
  • You'd rather use a tool that publishes the measured limits of its own score
  • You want free tools you can try without creating an account
